Tella alternative: keep it for videos you'll reuse
A recording you keep and a recording you discard need different tools. Where each of the two alternatives wins, with prices read on the editor pages.

A client walkthrough, an onboarding clip, a video you will send again next month: that is where Tella works. When a recording is throwaway (show, send, forget), paying for hosting and a branded page on it is paying for nothing, and a native Mac capture tool does the job faster and for less.
Keep Tella for videos you will reuse
Tella applies layouts, zooms and camera placement while you record, so a clean take is publishable the moment you stop. When a take does need cutting, Tella also has a timeline editor, transcript editing, and silence and filler-word removal, all listed on its pricing page.
On the accounts we run it on, Tella is where everything meant to last gets recorded. Training material, coaching sessions, the walk-through a client will watch twice. If the same video gets sent to three people over six months, it is a library asset, not a message, and it deserves a home with hosting, a branded page, and a link that still works when a new hire joins. That is the case our full review of Tella covers in detail.
Use CleanShot for throwaway recordings
CleanShot is for recordings you throw away, Tella for the ones you keep. A quick annotated clip showing a bug, a screen grab with an arrow on it, a recording you fire off on Slack and never open again: that recording has no afterlife, so a hosted library and a landing page for it are more than the job needs. A native Mac app sits in the menu bar, captures, and hands you the file. Done.
Read on CleanShot's pricing page on 19 October 2026: CleanShot Basic is $35 one-time, with one year of updates and 1 GB of cloud storage. CleanShot Pro is $10 per user per month, billed annually, and adds unlimited cloud storage and a custom domain and branding. Updates on Basic carry an optional renewal at $19 per year. The app requires macOS 13.0 or newer, and there is no trial but a 30-day money-back guarantee.
On Basic, one gigabyte of cloud storage is a scratch disk, not a library. Pro removes that limit, so the gap with Tella Pro ($13) is $3 per user per month, not a different class of product. What Tella's page lists on top is timeline and transcript editing, auto layouts and analytics. Tella is built for the recording that someone who was not in the conversation will have to find again. If you are weighing this against the big name in async video, the separate piece on Tella as a Loom alternative handles the Loom choice directly rather than repeating it here.
Use Riverside for recorded conversations
Tella is a solo-recording tool. A remote interview with several guests is a different job: it needs local recording on each side, so a dropped connection does not destroy the take. That is a job Tella does not take on, and Riverside is the tool in the category that does.
Riverside is not an affiliate of this site: we earn nothing if you choose it. It appears here because it is the only alternative on this page that solves a problem Tella and CleanShot do not touch, so if your week is interviews and recorded calls rather than demos and walkthroughs, start there.
Compare the real cost of each option
Pricing pages drift. Every price below was re-read on 19 October 2026, on each editor's own pricing page. Pro includes 3,000 Tella Agent credits per user per month, and unused credits expire at month's end; workspace owners can top up 10,000 credits for $10, 50,000 for $45 or 100,000 for $80, and purchased credits never expire. Premium is $19 per user per month, billed annually, and adds a custom domain, removal of the Tella branding and export at 60 FPS.
| Tool | Best for | Price (read 19 Oct 2026) | Keeps the video? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tella | Recordings you reuse and resend | $13 per user/mo, billed annually (Pro) | Yes, hosted and branded |
| CleanShot | Throwaway Mac captures | $35 one-time Basic, $10 per user/mo billed annually (Pro) | Basic: 1 GB of cloud. Pro: unlimited cloud, custom domain |
| Riverside | Remote interviews and calls | Free: $0 (2 hours of multitrack, one-off). Pro: $24 per month, billed annually ($288 a year), 14-day trial. Read 19 Oct 2026 | Yes, per-track downloads |
One structural difference worth naming: Riverside charges a subscription (its Free plan gives 2 hours of multitrack recording, once), CleanShot sells a one-time licence or a per-user subscription, and Tella charges per user with a credit allowance on top for its Agent features.
Tella for the second watch, CleanShot for the first
A recording sent twice, then never opened again checked every box for Tella on day one (client-facing, worth branding, worth a link that keeps working), and by the second month it is dead weight sitting in a hosted library. If the video will be watched more than once or by someone else, use Tella; if it will be watched once by you or a teammate, use CleanShot. If you want the wider category before picking, our video recording section groups every tool tested on production accounts, and the workflow piece on recording once and publishing the same day covers that same-day workflow.

What people still ask
What is cheaper than Tella?
CleanShot is the cheaper option for throwaway recordings: its Basic tier is $35 one-time, and its Pro tier is $10 per user per month billed annually, as read on 19 October 2026. Tella Pro runs $13 per user per month, also billed annually, so at the subscription level the gap is $3 per user per month, and CleanShot Pro includes unlimited cloud storage. The cheaper tool wins when the recording is one you throw away.
Is Tella billed monthly or annually?
On Tella's pricing page, read on 19 October 2026, the figures shown are annual: Pro at $13 per user per month and Premium at $19 per user per month, both listed as billed annually.
Does CleanShot replace Tella?
It replaces Tella for recordings you send once and forget, which is most of what people actually record. For videos you keep, send again, or brand, the gap is narrower than it looks: CleanShot Basic gives 1 GB of cloud, and Pro gives unlimited cloud with a custom domain and branding. What Tella's page lists on top is timeline and transcript editing and analytics. Both tools coexist on production accounts here.
Why is Riverside not on your affiliate list?
Because it is not affiliated with this site, and that is stated plainly: there is no commission on any Riverside link here. It appears in this comparison because remote interviews with several guests need local recording on each side, a job neither Tella nor CleanShot is built for.
Can Tella edit videos like a timeline editor?
Yes. Tella's pricing page, read on 19 October 2026, lists timeline editing and transcript editing, plus silence and filler-word removal. What Tella adds is that layouts, zooms and camera placement are applied while you record, so a clean take is publishable without opening an editor.
