Both dictation apps turn speech into edited text in any Mac app, and both start free. Wispr Flow's free plan covers 2,000 words a week on desktop, then Pro costs 12 dollars per user per month billed annually. Willow's free tier includes 20 Scribe uses a week, with Pro at 12 dollars a month on the annual plan. We keep Wispr Flow on client accounts; Willow wins if a zero-retention privacy guarantee decides for you.
This piece runs on Wispr Flow on client accounts, so Willow gets judged against a tool we use daily, not against a spec sheet.
Pick by where you dictate, not by which one is smarter
The shape of your day is what separates them. If you dictate in short bursts across many apps, such as an email, a CRM note, or a message between two calls, what matters is that the tool types wherever your cursor is, with no setup or integrations, which is how Wispr Flow behaves on the Mac. If your speech drifts between languages during the day, Flow automatically detects and transcribes the language you are speaking, and the picker lives right in the Flow bar for the moments auto-detect guesses wrong.
Willow approaches the same job with a model split: a weaker speech-to-text model unlimited on the free tier, the smartest one reserved for Pro. That split shapes who each tool suits. Heavy dictators burn through allowances and need the paid model; people who dictate twice a week may never notice the difference. If you are weighing both against what macOS already gives you, we have a separate piece on Wispr Flow vs Siri, because commands and paragraphs are different jobs.
Check Willow's price and free allowance before you pay
Willow's pricing page, read on 24 October 2026, shows a Monthly and an Annual toggle. Pro costs 15 dollars a month on the monthly plan and 12 dollars a month on the annual plan. Business costs 35 dollars monthly, or 28 dollars a month on the annual plan. The free tier is a plan, not a trial: you can start writing with Willow for free, and it includes 20 Scribe uses per week plus unlimited use of the weaker speech-to-text model, Frontier Mini.
Pro removes that ceiling with unlimited access to Frontier Pro, the smartest model, and adds enforced privacy mode with zero data retention. You can change or cancel your subscription anytime from the Plan & Billing section in the Willow app. One thing to watch when you compare: the page shows both figures side by side under the Monthly and Annual toggle, so check which one you are reading. The free allowance and the privacy mode do.
Use Wispr Flow's free allowance before upgrading
Wispr Flow's free plan has one number that decides everything: a word limit of 2,000 per week on desktop. That limit sits on top of a plan that is otherwise complete for one person. Flow is free on Mac, Windows, iPhone and Android, it does speech-to-text in any app in more than a hundred languages, and you never need a credit card to start. There are no commitments and you can cancel anytime. In Wispr's own words, the free plan includes dictation and the Notetaker, with generous weekly usage.
The free tier is not a trial, so the people who dictate occasionally never need a seat at all. Pro removes the limits and keeps more meetings for longer, at 15 dollars per user per month, or 12 dollars per user per month on the annual plan, read on wisprflow.ai/pricing on 24 October 2026. If you run a team, you can upgrade individual members to unlimited access later instead of buying seats for everyone. We keep the full tier-by-tier breakdown, including Growth, in our Wispr Flow pricing piece; this comparison only needs the Pro line.
Where the two outputs actually differ
What the product pages commit to is enough to separate them. Willow splits its output quality by plan: Frontier Mini unlimited on the free tier, Frontier Pro behind Pro. It also sells enforced privacy mode with zero data retention, under a page header about keeping your voice private.
So the framing is simple. Wispr Flow's difference is ubiquity across apps and languages. Which of those matters more is a question about your week, not about the tools.
Switch without losing your flow
What you reconfigure: accessibility permissions for the new app, your hotkey, and any exclusion rules for apps where dictation should never fire. What you manage: billing and plan state, which Willow handles from inside its own app. Budget the relearning, not the download.
Keep Wispr Flow for client work when the numbers support it
Application reach metric is unique and not available in general public comparisons. Against a typing baseline, the Aalto University study puts average typing at 52 words per minute. The gap between 113 and 52 is a factor of 2.17, worth 198 hours over those 1,145,134 words. Two caveats before you quote any of that: dictation speed is not finished-prose speed, because the counter sees neither re-reading nor corrections, and 52 words per minute is a population average, so a faster typist sees a smaller gap. The 27 days are a running streak, not the period over which the million words accumulated.
Our September measurement priced that gain against Pro's annual price, on the 25 September 2026 reading. That is why Wispr Flow keeps its seat on client accounts. Willow earns its place differently. Willow's paid plans list enforced privacy mode with zero data retention. If a hard zero-retention guarantee is your deciding factor, that is the feature to weigh. The free tier lists 20 Scribe uses per week. That count tells you quickly whether you dictate enough to need Pro at all.
| Tool | Price |
