Wispr Flow and Superwhisper both turn speech into text on a Mac, and they make the opposite trade. Wispr Flow rewrites your dictation into clean, formatted prose and learns from every correction you make. Superwhisper works offline, so you can transcribe anytime, and sells a one-time licence. Pick by where your text goes and what you pay, not by which one scores higher.

Pick by where your dictation runs: on your machine or in someone else's hands

The first question isn't accuracy, it's privacy and control. Superwhisper works offline, so you can transcribe anytime, on a plane or in a client's office with no signal. It supports over 100 languages and dialects, and you can pick the model behind it, from GPT to Claude to Llama, to balance speed and complexity. Wispr Flow goes the other way: what you dictate comes back as finished prose, punctuation and formatting included, and it learns from the corrections you make immediately. If you dictate long messages and emails, that rewriting is the whole point. If you handle sensitive material and can't have audio leaving the room, the local option settles the question on its own.

Wispr Flow's pricing, read on their pricing page on 20 October 2026: a Free plan at 0 dollars, Pro at 15 dollars per user per month, or 12 dollars per user per month when billed annually, and Growth at 23 dollars monthly or 18 dollars billed annually. The free tier isn't a trial with a clock: it carries a word limit of 2,000 words per week on desktop, and it stays free for individuals for as long as you like. That matters for teams, because the sensible move is to start everyone on the free tier and move only the heavy writers to Pro. We've broken the plan down line by line in our Wispr Flow pricing walkthrough, including what the free tier never asks of you.

One honest caveat from our own account: it is one of the more expensive dictation tools we run, and the free plan is generous enough to find out whether the price buys you anything before you pay for it.

Price Superwhisper over your expected usage

Superwhisper's page, read on 20 October 2026, lists a Free plan at 0 dollars, with yearly and lifetime options alongside, and 40% off for students. The free tier works like this: you can try the Pro features for 3,000 words for free, and after that the free tier features stay available to you forever, with a no-questions-asked refund within 30 days of purchase.

The lifetime option is the one to weigh if you're keeping the tool for years: a single payment against Wispr Flow's 12 dollars per user per month billed annually. At that monthly rate, the licence question answers itself within a couple of years of daily use. If you want the broader switch checklist, we keep one in our piece on Superwhisper alternatives.

The numbers from a year of dictation

A year of daily use on our Wispr Flow account adds up to 1,145,134 words dictated, and the account's own dashboard, captured on 25 September 2026, puts our average pace at 113 words per minute. Two other figures from the same capture matter for this comparison: the dictation has reached 144 distinct applications, and the longest recent run lasted 27 consecutive days. Those are the numbers a Mac's built-in dictation mode can't produce, because it serves one place and carries no counter.

Against a typing baseline, that speed is the argument. The Aalto University study from CHI 2018 measured an average typing speed of 52 words per minute. At 113 words per minute, the same 1,145,134 words took 169 hours of dictation against 367 hours of typing at that average, a gap of 198 hours and a ratio of 2.17. Two things keep this honest: 113 words per minute is dictation speed, not finished-prose speed, since the counter measures neither rereading nor corrections, and 52 words per minute is a population average, so someone typing faster would see a smaller gap.

The number we trust most is 144 applications. A built-in dictation feature serves one place; this one has served 144. That breadth is what a dictation tool buys you over a dictation mode, and none of the comparison pages we read on 25 September 2026, several of them written by competing tool makers, publish a figure like it, because it needs a real account with a year of use behind it. What Superwhisper's own page establishes is the offline transcription, the model choice and the pricing above.

What the account also settles is cost per hour gained. At the public Pro rate of 144 dollars per year, which is 12 dollars per month billed annually, the same caveats apply as for the hours themselves, and the result will look different for anyone whose typing is faster than the study average. The full picture of what the tool does with that time sits on the fiche wispr-flow.

Switch in an afternoon: what to test first

Test both on your own flow, not on a reviewer's. Take the same ten emails, the same client names, the same code-adjacent paragraphs, and run them through each tool this afternoon. Watch whether names come back right without a second pass, and whether the word limits bite before you've decided. Wispr Flow's free tier gives you 2,000 words a week on desktop to find out. Superwhisper gives you 3,000 words of Pro features before its free tier. If you're coming at this from the other direction, our Superwhisper alternative checklist walks through what to verify before moving anywhere.

Choose the one that fits your workflow

If you dictate all day across many apps and want the text to arrive finished, install Wispr Flow: that is the account we run, and the 113 words per minute and 144 applications above are why.

Where these numbers come from

What people still ask

How much does Wispr Flow cost?

The Free plan costs nothing and carries a word limit of 2,000 words per week on desktop. Pro is 15 dollars per user per month, or 12 dollars per user per month when billed annually, and Growth is 23 dollars monthly or 18 dollars billed annually, as listed on their pricing page on 20 October 2026.

Does Superwhisper work offline?

Yes. Their product page states that Superwhisper works offline, so you can transcribe anytime, and it runs on Mac, Windows, iOS and Android.

Is Superwhisper cheaper than Wispr Flow?

Superwhisper sells a lifetime option alongside its yearly plans, which Wispr Flow does not list. Wispr Flow Pro is 15 dollars per user per month, so how the two compare depends on how long you keep the tool.

What do the free tiers actually give you?

Wispr Flow's free plan has no trial clock and covers individuals indefinitely, capped at 2,000 words per week on desktop. Superwhisper lets you try the Pro features for 3,000 words, then keeps its free tier features available forever, with a refund window of 30 days after purchase.
